A capacitive touch screen is like a super-smart piece of glass that knows when you tap it, just like how your phone knows to light up when you touch it.
Imagine the screen as a giant, invisible cookie sheet. When you’re not touching it, it has a certain amount of electric energy, kind of like how a full cookie sheet is warm and ready for baking. But when you put your finger on it, some of that electric energy moves from the screen to your finger, just like how heat moves from a hot pan to your hand.
That’s why the screen knows you touched it, because it suddenly has less electric energy than before! The phone then uses this change to figure out where you tapped and what you want to do next.

When you touch the screen, some of those sensors notice their electric energy went down, like they lost some heat from the pan, and tell the phone: “Hey, someone touched me here!”
So even though your finger doesn’t look magical, it’s actually doing something really clever with electricity, just like how you know when a cookie is done by touching the pan!
