Private companies are like treasure hunters who want to dig up gold from space rocks.
Asteroids are big rocks that float around in space, and some of them have metals, like iron, nickel, or even platinum, things we use every day, like for making coins or special machines. Companies think these metals could be really valuable if they can get them from the asteroids.
To do this, they plan to send robots or spaceships to catch up with an asteroid and then grab some of its pieces, like picking up a rock from a beach. Once they have those pieces, they’ll bring them back to Earth, or maybe even process them in space, so we can use the metals inside.
Some companies are already building special machines that can land on asteroids and collect samples. It’s kind of like having a little robot friend who goes on an adventure every day, just to find shiny new treasures for us.
They hope one day people will be able to mine space rocks just as we now dig up mines here on Earth, but way farther away!
