How are ions formed?

Ions are formed when atoms lose or gain electrons, just like how you might lose or gain a toy during playtime.

Imagine an atom is like a kid in a playground, they have a certain number of toys (electrons) around them. If the kid plays too hard and loses a few toys, they become positively charged, that’s a cation. It's like when you lose your favorite ball and feel a little sad inside.

On the flip side, if another kid gives this kid extra toys, they now have more than they started with, making them negatively charged, that’s an anion. It's like getting a surprise gift and feeling super happy!

So, ions are just atoms that have become either positively or negatively charged because they’ve lost or gained electrons.
