Ancient people used sunlight, moonlight, and even fire to know what time it was.
Watching the Sun
Counting the Moon
The moon changes shape every few days, sometimes it looks like a full circle, other times like a crescent. People watched this and figured out how many days had passed. A group of moon phases makes up a month, just like you count your fingers to know how old you are!
Using Fire
Sometimes the sun wasn’t enough, especially when it was cloudy or dark, that's where fire came in! People would light fires at certain times and use them as reminders for important events, like festivals or meetings.
Ancient people were smart timekeepers, they just used things from nature to help them!
