Red light helps keep ecosystems safe at night for creatures that come out when it’s dark.
Imagine you’re playing hide and seek in a big forest. You want to stay hidden so your friends can’t find you easily. Now imagine if the lights were bright white or yellow, they’d be like having all your friends holding flashlights, making it easy to spot you. But if the light is red, it’s like having them use red night-lights, much softer and easier to hide from.
Nocturnal creatures are like you in this game, they come out when it's dark. If we use bright lights at night, like street lamps or big flashlights, it can scare them away or make it hard for them to find food. But red light is gentle and doesn’t bother them as much.
`
Why red is special`
Think of a firefly, they glow with a soft light. That’s kind of like red light, and fireflies don't mind other fireflies glowing nearby. So, using red lights at night is like having friendly fireflies helping the forest stay calm and safe for all its little nighttime friends.
Examples
- A streetlight turns on at night, scaring away the animals that live in the forest nearby.
- Using red light instead of white light helps a bat find its way through the trees.
- Red lights near a lake help frogs and fish sleep better.
