Wind turbines do not consume more energy than they produce in their lifetime, in fact, they make a lot of energy!
Imagine you have a toy windmill that spins when the wind blows. Every time it spins, it makes little lights blink on your bedroom wall. Now imagine that windmill is really big and can power whole houses, that's a wind turbine.
When a wind turbine starts working, it uses some energy to get going, like how you need a push to start spinning a toy. But once it’s going, it keeps making energy for many years, like how your favorite toy stays fun even after the first push.
Over time, the energy the turbine makes adds up. In fact, by the time it's been working for about 20 years, it has made more than enough energy to cover everything it used to start and keep running. So, wind turbines are like smart, hardworking toys, they give back way more than they take!
Examples
- A wind turbine needs about 6 months of energy to make enough electricity for its whole lifetime.
- Imagine a wind turbine as a tree that grows fruit, it takes some time, but eventually, it gives more than it needed to grow.
- If you use 10 apples to plant an apple tree, and the tree produces 500 apples over its life, it's worth it.
