We’re trying to figure out if we choose our own actions or if everything is already decided for us.
Imagine you're playing with building blocks. You can pick which block goes where, that’s free will. But what if someone else had already chosen all the blocks for you, and you just have to stack them in a certain way? That would be like being predetermined.
Free Will: Choosing Your Own Path
When you're playing with your favorite toys, you can decide which game to play, maybe you pick a race car instead of a puzzle. That’s free will, you’re making your own choices, just like when you decide what to wear in the morning.
Predetermined: Everything is Already Set
Now imagine you had a special robot that knew exactly what you would choose every time. It would hand you the same toy over and over again. You still play with it, but you're not choosing, the robot already picked for you. That’s like being predetermined.
Sometimes people think we have free will, sometimes they think everything is set in stone, it's kind of like playing a game where you can choose your moves or someone else decides them for you!
Examples
- Imagine you're on a train that's already left the station, you can't go back, but you can choose where to sit.
- You feel like you picked your career path, but your parents' advice and your school experience might have guided you there.
