What Was the Promise?
Jephthah was a leader who fought a big battle against his enemies. Before the fight, he said to God: “If you help me win this battle, I will give you what comes out of my house to be your offering.”
This means he promised that whatever would come out of his home first, probably someone very close to him, would become an offering to God.
What Happened Next?
After the battle, Jephthah went back home. The first thing that came out of his house was his daughter, who ran to greet him with joy. But now he had to keep his promise.
He felt very sad, but he followed through, and gave her as an offering to God.
It’s like if you promised your mom: “If I get an A on my test, I’ll give you my favorite toy.” If you get the A, you have to give up that toy, even if it feels really hard. Jephthah made a promise to God and had to follow through, even if it meant doing something very sad.
