Jephthah made a promise that led to a sad and surprising result.
Long ago, there was a man named Jephthah who had a daughter. He promised God that if he won a big battle, he would sacrifice his daughter as a thank-you gift. A sacrifice is like giving something very special, in this case, his own child, to show gratitude or make a promise real.
The Promise and the Problem
Jephthah kept his promise. He won the battle, so he had to do what he said he would. But instead of sacrificing her life right away, he let her live for a little while and then made her a sacrifice, maybe like giving her to someone else or letting her go somewhere special.
It’s like if you promised your friend that you’d give them your favorite toy if you won a game, and after you won, you gave them the toy instead of keeping it for yourself. Jephthah did something similar with his daughter, he honored his promise, even though it was hard.
A Sad Result
Some people think Jephthah’s daughter didn’t get to live very long after that. It’s like when you give away your favorite toy and miss playing with it, but in this case, the toy (or person) went somewhere new, and maybe not for very long.
So even though Jephthah kept his promise, it was a sad thing for him and his daughter.
