What Were Samurai?
Samurai were like super fighters in ancient Japan. They wore cool armor and used swords to protect their families and lands. Usually, most people thought only boys could be samurai, but that wasn’t always true.
Meet the Onna-Bugeisha
Some girls and women became onna-bugeisha, which means “female warrior.” These women were just as tough as the men. They trained hard, fought in battles, and even led armies. One famous onna-bugeisha was Tomoe Gozen, she wore armor and a helmet, just like the boys, and she was known for being super fast and strong.
It’s kind of like how some girls today play soccer or basketball just as well as the boys do. These women showed everyone that bravery and strength don’t depend on whether you're a boy or a girl, they’re about what you practice and believe in! Japan did have female samurai, some of them were really brave and strong, just like the boys.
