David Silverberg: What is a poetry slam?

A poetry slam is like a contest where people share their poems and get cheers from the audience.

Imagine you're in a big room with your friends. Everyone gets a turn to read a poem they wrote, and after each one, everyone claps or shouts how much they liked it. The person who gets the most cheers wins! That’s what happens at a poetry slam, except instead of friends, there are lots of people, and instead of just clapping, sometimes they even shout things like “That was awesome!” or “I love that line!”

How It Works

Each poet has a short amount of time to share their poem. They can use words, sounds, or even movements, it’s up to them! After each performance, the audience rates how much they liked it using points. The person with the most points at the end is the winner.

Why People Love It

It’s like having a party where everyone gets to be a star for a little while. You don’t need to be perfect, just be you and share your story. That’s what makes a poetry slam so fun and exciting!
