Characteristics of Living Things-What makes something alive?

Living things have special ways they do things that help them stay alive and grow, just like how you need to eat, play, and sleep every day.

Living things can grow, think of a seed turning into a tree or a baby growing up to be a big kid. It’s like when you put on your favorite shoes and they feel tight at first, but after a while, they get bigger with you!

They also need food, just like you eat snacks and meals to have energy. A cat eats fish, a plant drinks water and sunlight, and you might eat a sandwich. Without food, living things can’t keep going.

Living things move or change position, too! You walk around, birds fly, and even tiny ants crawl across the floor. Some things, like plants, don’t walk, but they still move in their own way, like leaves swaying in the wind.

They respond to what’s happening around them, if you touch a puppy, it might wag its tail or run away. A plant turns toward the light, and you might jump when you hear a loud noise!

And they can have babies, just like how you were born from your mom and dad! 🌟
