Can you predict a number that is "randomly" chosen by a person better?

It’s easier to guess a number someone picks if you know how people usually choose numbers.

Imagine your friend is picking a number from 1 to 10. You might think they’ll pick something like 5 or 7, those feel "in the middle." But if you ask them to pick a number really fast, maybe they'll go with 3, because that’s what came to mind first.

People aren’t like computers, they don’t pick numbers completely randomly. They have patterns and favorites.

Why guessing works

If you know someone likes even numbers or odd ones, you can guess better. Or if they always choose a number close to the one they picked last time, that helps too.

It’s like picking a candy from a jar, even though there are lots of choices, some candies just feel more special.

Try it out

Next time, ask someone to pick a number quickly and see if you can guess it. You might be surprised how often you get it right!

Examples

  1. A child picks a number between 1 and 10, you guess it's 7 because that’s their favorite number.
  2. Your friend says they'll choose a number from 1 to 20, but you know they always pick 13 because of their lucky charm.
  3. You're told someone will pick a number between 1 and 50, and you bet on 27, knowing that’s the most common choice.
