Can Free Will Actually Exist?

The Big Question

Imagine you want an apple or a banana. You pick the apple. Did you really choose? Or did your body just do what it was going to do anyway?

The Domino Theory

Think about falling dominoes. If you knock the first one down, the rest must follow. Philosophers ask: Is your brain like a line of dominoes? Your past, your genes, and what happened to you earlier all push the next domino. If so, you cannot stop the chain.

The Libet Experiment

Scientists did a fun test. People watched a clock with a moving dot. When they decided to move their finger, the dot was already past a certain spot. Their brains had started the movement before they realized they wanted to move. It feels like choosing happens later than it actually does.

Why It Matters

If we do not have free will, are we still to blame for mistakes? This changes how we think about rules, school, and family life. We might be kinder if we know others cannot help how they act.
