Ant Colony IQ: Just How Smart is an Ant?

Ant colonies are like tiny cities where all the workers are ants, and they work together without anyone telling them what to do.

Imagine you're playing a game with your friends in a big room, and you have to find the shortest path to the snack pile. You don’t know where it is, but every time you take a shortcut, you leave a trail of crumbs behind. If another friend sees that trail, they might follow it too, especially if there are lots of crumbs. That’s kind of how ants work.

When an ant finds food, it leaves something called pheromones on the ground as it goes back to the colony. Pheromones are like invisible footprints that other ants can smell. The more ants that follow a path, the stronger the trail gets, it’s like everyone agreeing that this is the best way.

If one path gets blocked or takes too long, the ants will try another one. Over time, they’ll pick the fastest route because that path will have the most pheromones from all the hard-working ants.

Even though each ant only knows what's in front of it, together, they're like a smart team, and that makes the whole colony really clever!
